Nine years ago I found out that I am expecting my first baby. Excitement filled our house, as Bruce and I prepared for the arrival of our little one. My mother made it look so easy raising 5 daughters, so I believed that 1 little girl would be one smooth ride…
Or so I thought…morning sickness came, hot flashes, mood swing, cravings for strange food and gaining almost 17kg! and staying 1 600km from our parents didn’t help either! “Why didn’t anybody tell me about this! Will we be able to do this?…Will I be able to do this?” QUESTIONS! QUESTIONS! QUESTIONS!
Then one day God stepped it and reminded me that where He leads He will provide. From that moment on I started to take things one step at a time and soon realised as the months went by that I was enjoying this whole process of becoming a mother…
Today we have two beautiful children, a 7 year old boy and 9 year old girl. The road so far has surely not been an easy one, but with God’s help and the working together as parents, we made it so far. Being a parent you need to trust God and be willing to ask Him for
guidance when you don’t know what to do.
“Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Here are just some things that helped us on this journey so far:
• Prayer and trusting God
• Working together as parents (Being like-minded)
• Being involved with our children’s lives
• Talking as parents about ways to discipline your child
• Us, standing together as a unit and not let the children use us against each
• Setting ground rules in the house and sticking to it! (Being consistent)
• Asking for help, everybody needs some help sometime
• Having fun as a family
• Loving each other as husband and wife (Being a role model to the kids)
For every parent it is a different journey they are on. Sit and discuss with your partner what will work for you as parents. Don’t compare yourselves with others, but live your own life as a family and don’t forget that children not a burden, but a Blessing from God.
****Always remember that the best thing you can do for your children is to love his/her mother/father…****
